Hidden Treasures

From September 5, 2024, to February 2, 2025, the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf will present the exhibition "Gerhard Richter. Hidden Treasures. Works from Rhineland Private Collections." Featuring over 130 works, this comprehensive exhibition highlights the significance of the Rhineland in Richter's artistic development as well as the emergence of a collector culture that has accompanied his work for decades.

The exhibition offers rare insights into private collections that include works that have never been publicly displayed. It traces Richter's artistic evolution and showcases the close connection to his collectors, spanning from his early years in Düsseldorf to the present. Gerhard Richter, who moved from East Germany to the Rhineland in 1961, found an inspiring art scene in Düsseldorf and a group of supporters who significantly influenced his career. This exhibition tells the stories of these collectors and illustrates their deep connection to Richter's work

The exhibition is curated by Markus Heinzelmann, Professor of Museum Practice at Ruhr University Bochum, who already presented a comprehensive overview of Richter's "Overpainted Photographs" in 2008. The exhibition is supported by Christie's auction house, which has auctioned over 1,000 of the artist's works.
