The Spirit of Osnabrück O49 Gin Takes the Global Market by Storm
One might believe that the history of Gin would be as equally wellknown as the drink itself. Yet, it seems the widespread appreciation of the beverage, thanks to its unique aroma and subtle bitterness, overshadowed that part of the spirit. Originating over a millennium ago, gin first gained popularity in the 17th century when the Dutch distilled juniper berries into a medicinal liquor called “genever”. Having adopted only the first three letters, its notoriety soared in England after a Glorious Revolution, transforming over centuries from a commoners’ drink plagued by social stigma into a refined staple of sophisticated cocktails.
For the longest time, there have only existed a handful of gin brands that supplied the world with the aromatic and slightly bitter spirit. To no surprise, those brands were also featured in the original recipe for a Gin Tonic, which called for 4cl of Gin and 16cl of Schweppes Tonic Water, best to be enjoyed in a highball glass with a slice of lemon and two ice cubes. The spirit in this form became a staple element in the world of cocktails - however, the formula was not meant to last forever.
In the 1990s, the resurgence of gin’s popularity marked a new era of innovation, where traditional recipes were rejuvenated with modern adaptations. This period set the stage for novel aromatics with infusions of cucumber and rose, which redefined gin’s flavor profile and opened the door to a burgeoning craft distillery movement.

Amid this vibrant landscape, a gin, distinguished by the deep ties to its origin, was brought to life in a family-run distillery near Osnabrück. In 2014, René Strothmann, founder of Spirit 49, developed a spirit that would embody the essence of its region with a potent and hearty flavor – O49 Organic Gin. While the O stands for Osnabrück, 49 is a reference to the postal code of the former hanseatic city. The gin, carefully distilled in the traditional 130-year-old Dwersteg distillery, is a testament to local craftsmanship, as well as dedication to both tradition and sustainability. Exclusively using organically grown botanicals and organic wheat alcohol, Spirit 49 maintain a commitment that underscores a pledge to purity and environmental awareness. The result: An experience in quality that can be tasted in each sip, from the aromatic juniper base to an herbal finish of hop and sage.
With a robust alcohol volume of 49%, O49 Gin sets itself apart from milder variations, but, despite its strength, offers a surprisingly smooth taste experience. Its exactly that bold, yet refined character that makes O49 an excellent base for a variety of cocktails, though is best to be enjoyed in its classic form with a shot of tonic and fresh sage.

We realized that, even at a higher alcohol concentration, the organic spirit simply tastes better, milder and is of higher sensoric quality.
It is through creations such as O49 that we realize how gin has come a long way and established itself as a dynamic and inventive beverage in the 21st century. Its quality has constantly improved, there is an extensive variety of flavors, and one thing seems certain, given the history of gin over the past 300 years: there will be more change ahead.
